Nicola Owen - Principal, Fellow & Examiner of the UKA Dance Association
I have been dancing since the age of 5 years old and have taken regular dance exams in Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle as a child. During my teenage years I travelled the length of the country every weekend to compete in Ballroom and Latin competitions. As part of my training I was coached in South Wales, the West Midlands and Surrey by experts in the Ballroom world. This enhanced my competitive career and through much hard work and dedication I was a regular finalist in National Competitions. In addition I have represented Wales at International level.
I took my first teaching exam in 2005 and since then I have continued my professional development and become qualified by the United Kingdom Alliance of Dance Teachers to teach Ballroom, Latin, Freestyle, Cheer dance and more recently Hip Hop. In addition I have a BSc Psychology degree and a postgraduate certificate in Special Education, which has enriched my ability to offer schools quality dance education.
Both my competitive experience and educational credentials have lead to the successful growth of the school over the years and I am proud that the school is now my full time occupation offering classes, private lessons, competitive training and school out reach work.
Ed Owen - Business Manager & Drama Teacher - Associate Teacher of the UKA
I trained as a primary school teacher and have a BA honours in education. I have performed with the Bottleneck Theatre company in multiple shows including Into the Woods and Billy Liar. Since 2015 I have been a principal in panto with HAPS at the Hereford Courtyard playing Kings, Princes and even the Dame! I have been involved with the Hereford Scout Gang show since 1990 both on stage and in more recent years as the chairperson. The Charming Theatre Company has been set up as the Drama arm of the dance school.
I was stage manager for Nicola's School of Dance's first ever show 'Tangled' in 2013 and produced and staged managed our 10 year anniversary show Ballroom Blitz in 2016. My skills and experience in the field will play an invaluable role in developing drama classes at the dance school. I look forward to working with the children and inspiring them to have the same love of performing as I do and seeing the Charming Theatre Company grow.
Until 2015 I worked as the branch manager for HSBC in mid Wales which has given me experience in events management, corporate training, business development and HR. I look forward to transferring these skills to Nicola's School of Dance and developing exciting opportunities for the students.
Jane Farmer - Dance Teacher - Associate Teacher of the UKA
I have been with NSOD since i was eight years old after joining an after school dance club at my primary school! I started ballroom and Latin classes when I was thirteen and have been competing in these styles since 2013. My biggest achievements would be coming first in the Hereford competition in 2013 and 2015.
I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to take my provisional teachers examination in summer 2015. I am extremely looking forward to working closely with all of the fantastic children within the dance school, and I want to share my passion for dance with the children to inspire them, as Nicola has inspired me, to pursue their love of dance.
In September 2016 I became full time at the Dance School leading the Cheerdance section and also working in schools both curricular and extra curricular. I continue to work in our private classes teaching Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle dance
Our Fabulous Student Teachers
I first started dancing with NSOD when I was five years old in a cheer class at primary school. Now being able to teach children cheer, drama and other dance styles makes me happy and proud to be part of this dance school.
I have been part of our performance team Co-motion since 2016 which is so much fun and very exciting when we perform, I also take classes in Latin and Freestyle dance.
One of my highlights is becoming a student teacher in 2019, I feel very passionate about all kinds of dance so really enjoy passing on everything i know to the children, and being able to teach them something that I love to do.
I started dancing when I was four years old, at five I joined the medalist team.
Throughout my time at nsod I have had so many amazing highlights, my favourite one being when I won 1st place at the Blackpool winter gardens in October 2018 in rhumba. Also another favourite is when I started teaching, I absolutely love seeing the kids enjoy dancing as much as I do, their love of dance brings me so much joy!
At the age of five, I attended my first cheer dance lesson with Nicola’s School of Dance. Soon after, I started freestyle lessons and joined the performance team Mini-motion.
My love for dance continued to grow and I found a passion for ballroom and Latin.
A favourite moment of mine would be ‘Ballroom Blitz’ at the Courtyard in 2016. It was amazing being able to dance in front of so many people along side the whole of team NSOD.
It was a privilege to be chosen to sit my student teacher exam, which has given me the opportunity to further my knowledge and teach Musical Theatre as well as dance.
I’ve been a member of Nicola’s School of Dance since 2008 when I attended a weekly class where Nicola taught Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle. This is where I found my love of dance.
In 2012, I joined the competition team and competed at my first competition in Chepstow at the age of nine, getting to both the Ballroom and the Latin final.
Some of my proudest memories are from competitions. I made the Ballroom final at my very first Blackpool competition in 2012 and have progressed to both Ballroom and Latin finals on a number of occasions since.
In August 2019, Nicola gave me the opportunity to take my provisional Student Teacher Award and I can’t wait to share my passion for dance and inspire the children the way Nicola has and continues to inspire me.
